I Have 30 Things to Do, So Obviously I’m Bedazzling Pants

I am officially 9 days away from Disneyland, and naturally, I have decided that now is the perfect time to start a completely unnecessary new project: bedazzling a pair of pants I bought on Friday.

I don’t know what it is about me, but I absolutely love adding giant projects to an already busy to-do list. Somehow, having more to do actually makes me more productive. Does it also make me incredibly stressed? Yes. But apparently, productivity without a tiny bit of self-inflicted chaos just isn’t my thing.

I think a lot of it is because I’m getting really excited for Disneyland. I have this vision for these pants, and if I can actually pull it off, they’re going to be so freaking cute. They’ll be completely unique, I’ll stand out a little, and obviously I’m already thinking about how cute they’re going to look in all of our pictures.

The problem is that my original vision is not exactly translating onto the pants the way it did in my head.

Which means I’m now improvising.

And if there is one thing I know about myself, it’s that improvising on a project usually means I’m about to spend approximately 400 more hours on it than I originally planned.

The truly insane part is that I want to do it. I am willingly sitting here individually placing rhinestones onto a pair of pants when I have plenty of other things I could, and probably should, be doing. I have two separate events this weekend that I need to make food and prepare for, and then we leave for Disneyland just a few days later.

Thankfully, I’m not very busy this week, so technically I have time. Whether I should dedicate that time to painstakingly bedazzling pants is a completely different question.

This is also a very predictable pattern for me. I joke that I either secretly have ADHD or I’m just addicted to stress because I do this constantly. I can have 30 small things on my to-do list, but instead of knocking those out, I’ll discover one giant project that takes hours and suddenly that is the only thing I care about.

I get completely consumed by it until it’s finished, while simultaneously stressing about everything else I’m not doing.

I do the exact same thing with the games I make for book club. I can never just make something simple and call it a day. Somehow every idea turns into a full-blown production that takes way more time than any reasonable person would dedicate to it.

So really, the bedazzled Disneyland pants are very on-brand for me.

Now we’ll see if I can actually finish them without neglecting everything else I need to do this week.
